The rotation curve was used to calculate the distribution of dark matter – the hidden mass that accounts for the higher velocity of matter in the outer regions of the galaxy than would be expected due to visible matter. The resulting map showed that the Milky Way has a lighter core, meaning that the centre of the galaxy contains an insufficient amount of dark matter.
According to the authors, this result contradicts other measurements. The scientific work may eventually improve understanding of the nature of dark matter and its role in the formation of galaxies.
